Drug interactions account for more than 190,000 hospitalizations in the U.S. annually, which is estimated to incur $30 billion in healthcare-related costs. Botanical dietary supplements and other natural products can precipitate drug interactions, which can lead to altered systemic and/or tissue exposure to the object drug, resulting in suboptimal pharmacologic or toxic effects. Concerns for natural product related adverse events have been rising for many years as the general public’s desire for alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs increases. Many patients, particularly those with chronic illnesses, often supplement their pharmacotherapeutic regimens with natural products, only heightening these concerns.
